“When is software better than AI?”
Software vs AI Software is better than AI when you need certainty: software works deterministically, AI works with probability. If X happens, software always returns Y. AI gives the most likely answer and only adds value with complex problems.
Transcript: When is software better than AI?
Zoiets.
How do you choose between software and AI?
Ask one question for each step in your workflow: does the outcome need to be the same every time? If so, that step belongs in software, such as sending invoices, transferring data or updating a status. If not, and an estimate adds value, AI is a good fit, such as summarising a text or writing a first draft. Most processes are a mix: software as a fixed foundation, with AI only where probability adds something.
Does the outcome always need to be the same?
Then choose software. A rule such as "if X happens, then always Y" produces exactly the same output every time for the same input.
When does probability add value?
With complex problems that have no single fixed answer, such as interpreting text or weighing up options. There, AI, which works probabilistically, is stronger than fixed rules.
Where does it often go wrong?
Using AI for tasks that need a fixed rule. A probability calculation for a step that always has to be the same causes unpredictable errors in your workflow.
If you want certainty in your answers and certainty in your workflows, use software.

Frequently asked questions on this topic
What do deterministic and probabilistic mean?
Deterministic means that the same input always gives the same output: if X happens, Y always follows. That is how ordinary software works. Probabilistic means that the system works with probability and chooses the most likely answer. That is how AI works. As a result, AI can give different answers to the same question, whereas software never does.
Can you combine software and AI in one workflow?
Yes, and in practice that is often the best approach. Software handles the steps that always need to run the same way, such as storing, forwarding or checking data. AI is only used for the steps where an estimate adds value, such as summarising text or writing a draft. That way the foundation stays predictable and you only use AI where it adds something.
Why is AI not suitable for every task?
AI works with probability and therefore gives the most likely answer, not a guaranteed answer. For tasks where the outcome always has to be exactly right, such as calculating amounts or following a fixed procedure, that uncertainty is a risk. There, software with fixed rules provides more certainty and less checking.
